9. Now after [Jesus] had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.

10. She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.

11. And when they heard that He was alive, and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.

Practical help

Are you in mourning? Has your life been shattered recently? Then you can relate to the disciples after the crucifixion of their best friend and teacher. He seemed to be doing so well. Just the week before he was entering Jerusalem as a hero in the likeness of King David. But suddenly, in a few days time, he’s gone.

And what about his teachings? He said so many wonderful and powerful things. What are we to do with them? Perhaps life is just about survival in the midst of corrupted political systems? This stuff about turning the other cheek and loving one’s enemies seems to have resulted in the enemies killing, not caving in to the power of love.

If you are struggling sexually and are tasting defeat and shame as a daily meal, them perhaps you see the power of God as a pipe dream. To you, he is still in the grave.

On the other hand, there are people who are telling you they have encountered him. Sure, they may have problems like Mary. Who would believe a woman with her past?

I would. For it is not the past, but the change that is remarkable. How did she change so dramatically?

Perhaps you are an old believer, just like the disciples. It doesn’t matter. You need to encounter the Living God and replace Him with your old theories and traditions. Then you will find the power for change you are looking for.
