Passage: Jeremiah 9:1*
Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I
would weep day and night for the slain of my people.
Questions
1. What was Jeremiah's emotional investment in the fate of his people?
2. How can we emulate him?
Practical help
Jeremiah was such a strong character that an English word was named for him:
"jeremiad," a long complaint. In this passage, the major prophet shows some
of the passion that gave rise to the term. He makes a startling emotional
identification with the slain of his people, the Israelites.
As strugglers against Web porn, we can do the same. Do you know people who
have suffered from the consequences of pornography? Perhaps they didn't die
like the Israelites, but they still suffered. It's time not only to share in
their pain but to do something about it. Follow Jeremiah's example by
standing up publicly against porn. Perhaps you can help shutter an X-rated
theater in your city or get "Playboy" and "Penthouse" removed from your
neighborhood convenience store.
And if people won't listen, launch into a jeremiad.
