Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: Exodus 17:8-13*

8. Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.

9. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.

10. Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11. So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.

12. But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were stead until the sun set.

13. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Questions

1. The victory of the army of Israel on the battlefield was dependent on Moses doing something. What was that “something”?

2. What/who enabled Moses to accomplish his responsibility?

Practical help

Standing strong in the face of sexual temptation is a tough assignment. Many men and women have succumbed to the lure of fleshly lusts. So, if you are battling to stay pure, know that you are a member of a big club!

At the same time, victory is possible. And we learn something important about attaining victory from this obscure story in Exodus 17.

Moses had to do his part — hold his hands high — for Israel to win over the Amalekites. But for him to accomplish his mission he needed help. Two fellow warriors stood on either side of him and supported his weary arms when he was too tired to lift even his hands.

Do you have fellow warriors who will lift your hands when you are weary of the fight against porn? Take a cue from Moses. He brought Aaron and Hur up to the top of the hill for a reason. He knew he couldn’t do what was required all by himself. He knew he would need help.

All of us who are engaged in the struggle for purity need help. God provides help through His living and active Word (Scripture), and through His Spirit, and through His people.

Don’t be afraid to ask a couple of brothers (if you are a man; sisters if you are a woman) to strengthen you on the mountaintop when the temptations to drop your guard seem overwhelming.
