Passage: Joshua 6:1-5*

1. Now Jericho was tightly shut because of the sons of Israel; no one went out and no one came in.

2. The Lord said to Joshua, "See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the valiant warriors.

3. You shall march around the city, all the men of war circling the city once. You shall do so for seven days.

4. Also seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

5. It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horns, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up every man straight ahead.

Questions

1. Does the plan outlined to Joshua strike you as good military strategy?

2. Why do you think the Lord required the Israelites to walk around the city for seven days? Why seven times on the seventh day?

Practical help

Could it be that God knew that His people would not deeply appreciate a victory that was too easily won? Might that be the reason for the seven-day march, or the seven-fold march on the seventh day?

Might it explain why your battle to be rid of the porn habit goes longer than you would have thought it should? You have prayed for deliverance, yet the victory hasn’t arrived. You have stopped for a while, but the craving returns, and you have given in — again!

It may be that God is teaching you (in the same way He taught the Israelites) not to expect overnight ultimate victory. That is not to say that the Lord doesn’t want you to experience victory, nor is it to say that victory isn’t just around the corner, or near to being realized or within your grasp. It is to say that the fight and the struggle and the wrestling against temptation are part of the process that leads to triumph.

So, keep fighting, friend. We at eXXit are cheering for you and praying for you.
