Passage: Luke 14:25-26*

25. Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:

26. "If anyone comes to me and does not his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters — yes, even his own life — he cannot be my disciple.

Questions

1. Does Jesus really want you to your family, or even your own life, in order to become his disciple?

2. What does this passage say to you about resolve and priorities?

Practical help

Suppose that in a time of confession and repentance you commit to your brother or sister or father or mother (or to yourself) that you'll steer clear of pornography. How strong do you expect your resolve will be if that person fails you by an out-of-character stumble.

In this passage Jesus is making a critical point about commitment and priorities: If you don't put God first, then your commitment is directed toward someone who will eventually fail you. Once that person has failed you, the basis for your commitment tends to fail you, too.

Jesus wants you to be successful in your commitment to change, but he knows you can't be if your commitment isn't to him first. He promises never to fail you.
