Passage: Proverbs 8:1-5, 35*

1. Does not wisdom call, and understanding lift up her voice?

2. On top of the heights beside the way where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

3. Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, at the entrance of the doors, she cries out:

4. "To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men.

5. O naive ones, understand prudence; and, fools, understand wisdom."

-----

35. "But he who sins against me injures himself; all those who hate me love death."

Questions

1. Verses 1-5 set the stage and explain who is speaking in verse 35. Who is the speaker?

2. What is the opposite of wisdom? Do you consider the opposite of wisdom a sin or violation of God’s best for you?

Practical help

Chapter 8 of Proverbs is the call of Wisdom. The picture is of a woman calling to people as they pass by at the entrance of a city or in the market place. Now imagine the scene. Think about the throngs of people and all the venders shouting to get your attention. Wisdom is one small female voice in a crowd. You can hear her if you want, but you have other choices as well.

In the area of Internet pornography, the visual images shout to you, but you also have a little place like eXXit.org where you are invited to stop and consider an alternative to the world’s goods. We aren’t flashy, but we are here every day offering you a small dose of wisdom.

Think about Wisdom standing and calling at the gates of a city as described in verse 3 above. Now read Jesus’ description of two gates in Matthew 7:13-14:

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

The point is, you do not know what the future will bring you specifically, just like you can’t see what is on the other side of a gate. But you don’t need to know the future if you recognize the voice that is calling you. Don’t be suckered into going with the porn crowd. Stop and think for yourself. The gate to life is the little one over there.
