Passage: Mark 12:28-31*

28. One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

29. "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

30. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'

31. The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

Questions

1. What aspect of your being is left out in verse 30?

2. When you are involved in pornography, where is your focus? Who are you loving, or trying to love?

Practical help

The first passage that Jesus quotes (Deuteronomy 6:4) in answer to the teacher's question is one that is near and dear to Jews and Christians alike. The Jews called it the "Shema," which means "hear", and recited it daily. As Christians we would equally benefit from having this law written on our door frames. It should be something that we hear every day, and it cannot be repeated too often. When your focus is on this command, you should find it impossible to do porn. Porn involves your heart (the seat of emotion), the soul (your will), the mind (your thinking) and your strength (your body) in an activity that is clearly not loving the Lord.

If we don't stop there, but also focus on the second command, we will see that it is not good enough to just stop doing evil; we should start doing good for those around us, those people with whom we share the love God has given us. If our love is truly healthy, it will involve every aspect of our being.
