Passage: Psalm 16:1-9*

1. Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in Thee.

2. I said to the Lord, "Thou art my Lord; I have no good besides Thee."

3. As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.

4. The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, nor shall I take their names upon my lips.

5. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; Thou dost support my lot.

6. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.

7. I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.

8. I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

9. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will dwell securely.

Questions

1. In the quiet of the night while you are alone in your thoughts, do you ever discover that you are able to see problems of the day in a different (and better) light? Perhaps this is what David is referring to in verse 7, and typical of David, he gives the credit for this insight to God.

2. What does verse 8 mean to you?

Practical help

Night can be a quiet time or a time of great temptation. In the dark, people think they can get away with things they never consider doing in daylight. The reality is that the Lord is with us at all times. Rather than running or hiding from this thought, David meditates on the closeness of God.

The battle is in the mind when it comes to pornography. By setting the Lord continually before you in your thought life, the promise of these verses is that good things will happen.

Here’s the list.

1. You will not be shaken (fears will not rule over you).

2. Your heart will be glad (your attitude will improve, and you will begin to relax and enjoy life more).

3. Your glory will rejoice — this is a little tough to interpret, but I will give you my take on it. When you act the way God desires you to act, the result is that He is glorified. It’s as if His truth shines forth in the world, and you become a light for Him ("glory" implies shimmering, beautiful, heavenly light). When God’s glory is displayed in the world, it’s a wonderful and positive thing, which brings forth rejoicing.

4. Your flesh will dwell securely (you will have physical safety).

May God richly bless you today as you walk before Him.
