53. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory.
55. "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?"
56. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
57. but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
1. How does the writer describe the physical transformation that will one day take place for each person who knows Christ?
The writer is captivated by the coming glory of what lies ahead for each Christian. He understood that the dead would be raised and living caught up — completely transformed! The old perishable stuff, corrupt through sin, will be replaced by the new imperishable you and me. Mortality will give way to immortality. Then the conqueror’s shout, “Death is swallowed up in victory.” Jesus has conquered death and been raised from the dead. Sin and death have been defeated.
Think of how the lure of Web porn pales in comparison to the coming glory of being one day clothed with the new imperishable you! The writer’s parting thought is important: in view of the coming transformation, we are now strengthened to stand firm, not letting anything move us in our walk in Jesus. We now see beyond this world and beyond our own physical death on to eternal realities.
