Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

This study takes another look at wisdom as a way to resist web porn.

Passage: Proverbs 1:1-7 (New International Version*)

1. The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2. for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;

3. for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;

4. for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young —

5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance —

6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Questions

1. What does it mean to fear the Lord (verse 7)?

2. Does wisdom lead to the fear of God — or the other way around?

Practical help

Some men think they should praise God for delivering them from web porn. Well and good. But this passage offers an additional option: Praise him before even attempting to resist porn. How?
1. Praise him for how he wired you (physically, emotionally, sexually, etc.). Take your eyes off how you use (or misuse) your mind and body. Focus instead on how God made you.

2. Don’t like how God made you? Try finding one thing you think he did right when he made you. Praise him for that. Then look for a second, third, fourth, etc., thing you think he did right when he made you, and praise him accordingly. See if this process changes your attitude toward God. It may be a slow process — like solving riddles (verse 6).

3. On the other hand, do you like how God made you? Praise him as creatively as your temperament allows.

4. In either case, make praise of God your first step in resisting web porn.

Know this: The Bible promises that wisdom provides discipline and prudence (verses 3-4) — the strengths needed to resist porn. The Bible also says the process starts with praising God.

Many men have tried this process and, with God’s help, have said No to web porn. They’re cheering you on to do likewise. You can do it!
