Passage: Matthew 5:3-11*

3. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

10. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

What does it mean to be poor in spirit?

 

Practical help

Beaten down by a porn habit or other moral defeat? In other words, "poor in spirit"?

If yes, know that Jesus uttered the famous words in verse 3 above with you in mind.

They're the first words of his famous Sermon on the Mount. And it's as though he couldn't wait to speak them to you.

Know this: God thinks a lot about you and other folks who are poor in spirit. This puts the lie to the notion that he hates you and is planning to write you off.

So take heart. God is thinking about you intently as you struggle with porn. He's getting ready to cast you a life preserver. He's made up his mind to rescue you.

That's doubtless what Jesus meant when he said that the poor in spirit, including you, will get the kingdom of heaven.
