When Paul uses words like "destroy" and phrases like "taking captive" we envision a pitched battle. But he isn’t urging Christians to take up the sword against Roman might or against enemies of the Gospel. Military action has NEVER been a legitimate Christian response to challenges to the faith.
Instead, Paul is using the military terminology figuratively to capture our imaginations when it comes to the level of commitment necessary to win the battle of the mind for Jesus.
All day long, messages from the advertising culture and elsewhere bombard (there is that military imagery again) our conscious and sub-conscious minds. Many of those messages are sexual in nature, and we find ourselves tempted to think and act in ways we know would displease our Captain.
The Bible tells us to FIGHT against those messages. Soldiers are forced to fight against their enemies, and so are we who want to be done with the evil of porn.
We are to put into prison our every thought so that what we consciously choose to think about is what Jesus would have us think about.
There is no passivity here. EXXit writers and readers are called to an active fight against porn. It’s a battle — but the end goal, PURITY, is worth the sacrifice of the fight.
