Passage: Psalm 119:67-68, 71*

67. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Thy word.

68. Thou art good and doest good; teach me Thy statutes

71. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn Thy statutes.

Questions

1. The psalmist understands that Scripture is a protection against evil. How did he come to have that understanding?

2. What is his perspective on the value of affliction, now that he looks on it with 20-20 hindsight?

Practical help

Why do you think men get involved with Internet porn? You can probably think of lots of reasons. There are lots of reasons. But there is a safeguard that probably factors into the lustful viewing habits of most of those who are trapped: They have forsaken a consistent, regular, thoughtful, soul-searching look at Scripture. That is a risky thing to do! Scripture provides protection against moving in ways that don't honor God. It is not that "A verse a day keeps the devil away." Rather, by regular exposure to God's truth, we are constantly kept on our spiritual toes, alert, ready, vigilant. Don't take the risk of facing the temptation to view porn unguarded. You are to "put on the whole armor of God" (Ephesians 6) — and that means taking up the broadsword of Scripture!
