Passage: Matthew 18:8-9*

8. If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

9. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Questions

1. This passage sounds drastic. Do you think Jesus really wanted people to do something this extreme to control besetting sins?

2. What sort of drastic actions can you take to curb an unhealthy habit?

Practical help

In this passage Jesus wants you to understand the gravity of sin. Things that cause you to sin repeatedly have to be dealt with in a radical way. He uses graphic examples to make the point that you might have to give up something to keep it from leading you to sin.

Do you have a Web porn habit that you want to ditch but aren't having much success?

You may have to get drastic. Here's a short list of increasingly drastic actions to try:

Ask a trusted friend to keep you accountable by calling you regularly.

Have a trusted friend enable content filtering on your browser and not tell you the password. (If you don't know if your browser supports it, email us.)

Change your Internet service provider to one that features filtered access. Click here for a few options.

Get rid of you Internet access all together, and get a free e-mail service if you need it.

Hopefully, one of the earlier steps above will help you turn the corner, but don't be afraid to cut hard and cut deep.
