Passage: 2 Peter 1:1-3*

1. Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

2. Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

3. seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

Questions

1. To whom is the apostle writing? (v. 1)

2. He says that God’s divine power has granted his readers something. What is that "something"?

Practical help

First, notice that Peter is writing his letter to Christians. That is what he means by the words, "the same faith as ours." So, whatever he is going to say in the verses that follow apply only to Christians. Are you a Christian? That is, have you placed your faith in Jesus for salvation? If you want to find out how to become a Christian and BECOME a recipient of all that Peter writes about in his letter, click here.

Peter promises the Christians to whom he is writing that God’s power has already given them everything they need to lead a God-honoring life. In other words, they do not need to wait around for God to give them something they haven’t yet received. They are already fully equipped to pursue holiness, to resist temptation, to obey God.

What was true for the believers in the first century is also true for you and me in 2001. If you are stuck in your wrestling match with pornography, take heart. As a believer in Jesus, you have received all of the equipment you need to say, "NO!" to porn. You don’t need to wait for God to give you something you haven’t yet received.

The problem may be, though, that you haven’t taken advantage of His good gifts. Among the gifts that particularly help with the problem of porn are His Word (are you reading it and seeking to obey it) His people (men, are you fellowshipping with brothers who will help you stand strong?; women, with sisters who will help you?), and His Spirit (are you praying for God’s help to resist temptation?). Take advantage of those good gifts today - and stand strong against sexual temptation.
