Passage: 2 Samuel 13:2*

Amnon became frustrated to the point of illness on account of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.

Questions

1. Why did Amnon pine away for Tamar?

2. When it comes to pornography, how are we like Amnon?

Practical help

The Old Testament story sounds strangely familiar: A man desires a woman he cannot have and is driven to distraction -- even illness -- as a result. Is Amnon’s dilemma not a parable for modern pornography? Think about it. Pornography stirs sexual desires with no hope of consummation, no matter how much our feverish minds can imagine.

In Amnon’s case, the story took a turn for the worse: He raped Tamar (see 2 Samuel 13:3-18). Likewise, if left unchecked, pornography can lead us into deeper and deeper perversions. Take a lesson from Amnon’s folly: Inaccessibility leads to frustration -- and frustration leads to desperation.
