Passage: Matthew 4:18-22*

18. And walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

19. And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

20. And they immediately left the nets, and followed Him.

21. And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them.

22. And they immediately left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Practical help

You might be fortunate enough to have a really exciting job. Or maybe you have a really important and critical job. Will that guarantee you'll never have a time of wondering "what's it all for?"

You might be someone who has one of those mundane "somebody has to do it" jobs. Or maybe you're in between jobs. Does that mean you'll live in a perpetual state of wondering "Is this all there is?"

In yesterday's study you were asked whether Jesus was offering those he called any new purpose to their lives. Looking at verse 19 we see that Jesus told Peter and Andrew to follow him, and he'll make them fishers of men. It's not that fishing for fish wasn't exciting enough or important enough. It's that it can't be trusted to answer the fleeting or perpetual questions above.

When we loose site of our own value and purpose it's easy to look for a cheap thrill. Something to excite and titillate at a time when there seems to be no point to it all.

They didn't know it at the time, but Jesus was going to pay an immense price so that Peter and Andrew and James and John (and you and I) could have a new purpose to life. He paid with his life so that you could have a trustworthy purpose to your life. Maybe you're not called to drop everything and go be an evangelist like the apostles, but you are called to see that the same price was paid for you. Even in the mundane, boring and apparently purposeless times, God has his plan (purpose) for you. Just trust it.
