Passage: I Kings 9:4*
As for you, if you walk before me in integrity and uprightness, as David your father did ...
Questions
1. How did David — an adulterer and accessory to murder — walk before God in "integrity and uprightness"?
2. What can this idea teach us about our struggles with porn?
Practical help
A father recently phoned into a Christian radio show, blurting out to the hosts, "I didn't spend much time with my son. Now he's in college, and I can't sleep at night. I think it's because I haven't forgiven myself for being such a neglectful father."
This is a remarkably self-aware statement. Many of us live lives loaded with guilt over say, pornography, and never recognize that God has forgiven us for those missteps long ago. After we complete the cycle of confession and repentance, we must only begin again — not rehash the past.
God knows this. That's why he described a notorious sinner like David as a man of integrity. Many of us have probably never committed the sins attributed to the king of Israel.
Yet David did something that many of us do not: After falling, he got back up again. God honors David's persistence in this verse. Let's take a lesson from "the man after God's own heart" by leaving the past behind.
In other words, what sin?
