Passage: Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26*
18. While He was saying these things to them, behold, there came a synagogue official, and bowed down before Him, saying, "My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live."
19. And Jesus rose and began to follow him, and so did His disciples.
...
23. And when Jesus came into the official's house, and saw the flute-players, and the crowd in noisy disorder,
24. He began to say, "Depart; for the girl has not died, but is asleep." And they began laughing at Him.
25. But when the crowd had been put out, He entered and took her by the hand; and the girl arose.
26. And this news went out into all that land.
Questions
1. Why did the girl's father seek after Jesus?
2. What did Jesus do for him?
Practical help
Can you imagine the pain this father felt and the helpless feeling he must have had as he watched his daughter die? We all face desperate moments like that and we all experience times when we are either too weak or too small to conquer the circumstances of our lives. This father had heard about Jesus. "Could He really raise the dead?" Jesus was his only hope. Of course Jesus had the power and the desire to raise the girl from the dead. He met the father's need. Who else could?
