Passage: Proverbs 30:1-3*

1. The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh — an oracle: This man declared to Ithiel, to Ithiel and to Ucal:

2. "I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding.

3. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.

Question

How would you describe the mood of the writer of the passage above?

Practical help

From time to time, it's a good idea to admit that we don't know nothin' about God's ways. Such an admission doesn't have to be wrought with guilt, shame, or a poor self-image. It can be simply an acknowledgment of truth, no more, no less. This is the case in the passage above.

Truth is a good ally when standing strong against porn, being mightier than guilt, shame and, of course, a poor self-image. The name for this dependence on truth, rather than on self-abasement, is humility. It recognizes only one thing: the unsearchableness of God's wisdom and power.

Struggling with smut? Don't sully the campaign with self-recrimination. Let go of any sin, but then let go of any obsessive hand-wringing. Humility doesn't need the help.

God wants to know that you know only one thing: He's boss.
