Title: The Holy Spirit — and Porn
Keyword: "Holy Spirit”
Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

The current studies explore the following premise: "If we want to behave Christianly, we've got to believe Christianly." Will the premise help us stand strong in the face of sexual temptation?

Passages: Romans 8:9-14; 26-27*

9. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

10. And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

11. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.

12. So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh —

13. for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

26. And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

27. and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Questions

1. On any given day, how often do you think about the Holy Spirit, the third member of the Trinity?

2. What do you learn about the Holy Spirit from the verses above?

Practical help

Dozens of passages in the New Testament provide tons of information about the Holy Spirit. Romans 8, though, speaks about Him (that's right — the Holy Spirit is a Person) at greater depth than just about any other place you'll find.

Romans 8 assures us that the Spirit is in each and every person who has placed trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross for salvation. No exceptions. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart the instant you trust Jesus as part of the "package deal" of salvation.

What does He do for us? Among other things, He energizes us to live for God (verse 11). He enables us to murder sinful deeds we are tempted to act out (verse 13). He leads us into obedience to God's commands (verse 14). He helps us when we are weak by praying directly for us, since we don't know how to pray all that well (verse 26).

Isn't this kind of a ministry exactly what every one who struggles with porn needs? When speaking to His disciples, Jesus once referred to the Holy Spirit by the Greek term "parakletos." The word can mean "comforter" or "encourager" or "admonisher" or "stengthener." All this — and more — is what the Holy Spirit provides for believers in Jesus! Maybe tomorrow all of us will think a bit more about the Holy Spirit.
