What is meant by the “heart”?

 

Practical help

This passage says that the heart — home of our likes and dislikes, among other things — impacts everything. The verse also counsels us to govern shrewdly what we allow the heart to like and dislike.

Which implies that there is an even greater faculty that is capable of such governance. That greater faculty is the will — our decision making apparatus.

This is good news. It means our passions don’t have to boss us around. We can steer them instead with our will.

So if Web porn has caught your fancy, your will can instruct your heart to resist the temptation.

If this fact is obvious, well and good. But for many porn strugglers, the fact that they have the power to control their hearts may be a forgotten truth.

If this is the case with you, reaffirm this truth. Stand strong, and say no to porn.
