Keyword: "hunger" "satisfaction"
Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

This is the fourth in a series of studies on the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew 5. Jesus spoke these words to a mixed group of disciples and nondisciples.

Passage: Matthew 5:6*

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

Questions

1. For what things in life do you "hunger and thirst"?

2. Would it be accurate to say that you "hunger and thirst" for sexual satisfaction? How do you go about satisfying that "hunger and thirst"?

3. What do you think a "hunger and thirst" for righteousness would involve?

Practical help

People are hungry. Food and drink are daily requirements for bodies. But our hunger goes beyond the physical. We have an appetite for significance, security and loving relationships, too. And, we were designed with what has been called "a God-shaped vacuum" that can only be satisfied by God Himself.

When people cease seeking to fill that God-shaped vacuum with God, they begin trying to stuff other things into that vacuum instead. One of the most common vacuum-stuffers is sex!

Is it possible that your appetite for sexual satisfaction, which you have been fueling with the ugly habit of porn, is simply a cheap substitute for the grander fulfillment that God offers by His own presence?

Jesus hits a nerve when He boldly asserts that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied. Only God can really satisfy. Next time you are tempted to surf the Web for smut, laugh in the Enemy’s face and tell him, "It won’t work this time. This time I’m going in for some soul food. I’m going to pray to God." Jesus promises that when you do that, you’ll find real nourishment.
