Passage: Matthew 9:9*

And as Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man, called Matthew, sitting in the tax office; and He said to him, "Follow Me!" and he rose, and followed Him.

Questions

1. Matthew (or "Levi" as he is called elsewhere) was a tax collector. How highly do you think Matthew ranked in the popularity contests of the ancient city of Capernaum?

2. Tax collectors — publicans, as they were called in Jesus' day — earned their money by extorting hard-earned money from their fellow Jews to pay the Romans and then charging the taxpayers exorbitant fees for their own tax-gathering wages. Would you call Matthew a fine, upstanding citizen?

Practical help

People who avail themselves of porn on the Internet often feel guilty for doing something that they know is wrong. (In fact, that guilty feeling is the gift of God. If we didn't have consciences, we wouldn't even know we were guilty!) That sense of guilt and shame has turned many folks away from God. But, that is not the way it is supposed to be! Jesus came to rescue people who are guilty because of their sin. Just as He called Matthew to "Follow," so He calls every porn addict to "Follow." Leave the place where you have been finding life (Internet chat room, porn Web sites — they are all alike to Jesus), and follow Him. He'll remake you as surely as He remade Matthew. It all starts with one step — the step of faith toward Jesus. Take that step today! Click here to learn how to take that step of faith.
