Passages*
Exodus
2:11-12
11. One day, after Moses had
grown up, he went out to where his own people were and
watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian
beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
12. Glancing this way and that
and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him
in the sand.
Exodus 3:3-7
3. [Forty years later,
having run away from Pharaoh, Moses sees the burning
bush] So Moses thought, "I will go over and see
this strange sight why the bush does not burn
up."
4. When the Lord saw that he had
gone over to look, God called to him from within the
bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I
am."
5. "Do not come any closer," God
said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you
are standing is holy ground."
6. Then he said, "I am the God
of you father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac
and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face,
because he was
afraid to look at
God.
7. The Lord said, "I have indeed
seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard
them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I
am concerned about their suffering."
Exodus 3:10-12
10. So now, go. I am sending you
to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of
Egypt."
11. But Moses said to God, "Who
am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the
Israelites out of Egypt?"
12. And God said, "I will be
with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is
I who have sent you: When you have brought the people
out of Egypt, you will worship God on this
mountain."
Questions
1. What qualifications did
Moses have to be the one God used to save his people,
Israel?
2. Put yourself in Moses
sandals. What might he have been thinking when he said
to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and
bring the Israelites out of Egypt?"
3. Instead of explaining to
Moses why he was selected, what was Gods answer
to his question? Do you ever ask God similar questions
about yourself? What can you learn from this passage
about how God might answer you?
Practical
help
I dont think Moses
had a great childhood. It was a mix, probably like
yours and mine. On the one hand, he had material
prosperity, but on the other, he was aware of the
phoniness. He saw the injustice toward his true people
by those who had adopted him.
One day, a full-grown Moses
decides to take matters into his own hands. He moves
to improve his world only to discover that he has
blown it big-time. So he runs away.
What about you? Are you
comfortable materially? (Obviously you have a computer
with Internet access at no small expense.)
Are you keenly aware of wrongs
in the world and do you see the hypocrisy in the lives
of those close to you? (Frankly, who doesnt?)
Do you also feel a pull to act?
And if so, have you found that your attempts have been
unsuccessful or unappreciated?
Have you used your failures as
an excuse to escape into pornography? Or perhaps you
see pornography as your failure? (Both or either could
be true.)
God is calling you. Yes, you!
What does He want? No different than what He wanted
from Moses. He wants you to make a difference in the
lives of those around you. I obviously dont know
the specifics as they pertain to you but you
do. Look around. Who is hurting? Who is enslaved? But
you dont feel worthy? Well, then you are in good
company; Moses didnt either.
If this is not making any sense
to you, may I suggest you read 1 Corinthians
1:18-31.
