Passage:
Mark 2:18-22*
18. Johns disciples
and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said
to Him, Why do Johns disciples and the
disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do
not fast?
19. And Jesus said to them,
While the bridegroom is with them, the
attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So
long as they have the bridegroom with them, they
cannot fast.
20. But the days will come
when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then
they will fast in that day.
21. No one sews a patch of
unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch
pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse
tear results.
22. No one puts new wine
into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the
skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but
one puts new wine into fresh
wineskins.
Questions
1. Why do people
fast?
2. When should people
fast?
Practical
help
Yesterday we saw that
Jesus goes to parties when sinners invite him (Mark
2:13-17). Today we see him as the bridegroom at his
own party. Jesus likes parties, and he is planning a
big one. Youre invited, by the way.
The book of Revelation calls the
party The Marriage of the Lamb. His bride
is described as wearing fine linen which is the
righteous acts of the Saints (Revelation 19:8).
The idea is that when those who love Christ finally
get to heaven, we will be involved in a ceremony and
celebration with Jesus that has an intimacy and love
just like a wedding.
If you have never thought that
God wanted a relationship with you in the first place,
this idea might be bursting your mental wine skins!
Life with God is intended to be a feast now and
forever. Pornography doesnt hold a candle to
what this could be like in your life.
