Practical help
The Beatitudes are some of the most famous words in the Bible and
they begin the most famous sermon Jesus ever gave, the Sermon on the Mount. If you look at
the two verses that precede this one, you will discover that Jesus did not give this to
the multitudes, but to his disciples who were sitting nearby. If you think about life,
there are the masses who are vaguely familiar with Jesus and consider Him a holy man, and
there are the few who recognize Him as God in the flesh. To the few He speaks the words we
are going to consider in the next few days.
Do you want to be His disciple? What will it take?
"Blessed are the poor in spirit." Look at your life. Are you involved in
internet pornography? Do you cheat on your taxes? Do you curse those who annoy you? The
life of the disciple begins by acknowledging the truth of your own condition.
This is the point at which you receive the grace of God. To you is given the kingdom of
heaven.
