Passage: John 14:6*

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

Questions

1. Imagine you are at a party and you are introduced to someone new. They would like to know a little about you. What is your normal response? Do you tell them what you do, or who you are?

2. Most things that describe you right now could be different tomorrow. How is this different from Jesus’ claim to "I am the way, truth and life?"

Practical help

This is the fourth of six studies on John 14:6. Thus far we have looked at three attributes that Jesus claims for Himself. Today let’s look at something a little more subtle. Note that Jesus did not say, "I am now, the way, truth and life." This would have implied that he earned the right to these attributes. He is actually saying, "In my essence, I Am…." Obviously He is making these claims before dying on the cross for our sins. Or another way to say it could be, "I have always been these things because of my very nature."

Remember the story of Moses and the burning bush (Exodus 3)? This is what God says as Moses stares at a bush surrounded by fire that is not consumed, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Jesus comments on this event in Luke 20:37-38: "…Even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him." God has a quality that transcends time. He is outside of time.

So Jesus is saying, "I Am God Eternal." In contrast, you and I are finite beings with problems. If you are struggling with a porn habit or addiction today, look to the One who has known you intimately even before you were born (Psalm 139). When you are at your computer, He sees you, and knows you intimately, and yes, even loves you as you are. The proof of this is that He died for you before you could do anything to earn it in time. But since time is irrelevant to the God who is "I Am," it counts just as much as if He went to the cross today. Have a great day!
