Passage: Mark 12:1-2*

1. And He began to speak to them in parables: "A man PLANTED A VINEYARD, AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.

2. "And at the [harvest] time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive [some] of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers.

Questions

1. Think about other parables Jesus has told. When he speaks of the harvest time, when in history is he talking about?

2. Do you ever feel God is too demanding? How might this parable help your perspective?

Practical help

As Christians we believe that God has authority over all people. There is never a time when people have authority over God. However, this doesn’t keep us from getting bent out shape once in a while when we feel that God is treating us unfairly. Somehow we have come to believe at times that the world’s goods are ours or should be ours. We believe the same way about our own lives, even when the truth is we didn’t lift a finger to birth ourselves. Life is a gift and is temporary.

Just as there is a season in the year when farmers harvest their fields, so there is a time in our lives when God calls us to give him an account. Certainly, this will occur at the end of our lives, but even before this, there are times when we are confronted with the direction our lives are heading. It is as if God has his finger in our face and is asking some rather penetrating questions. Is it unreasonable for the owner to expect that his servants give him a return on his investment?

You are wise to take time periodically and consider where you are in relation to God. Is there anything keeping you from growing closer to him? Pornography is a symptom of a deeper discontent with God’s plan for your life. Ask him to show you what he seeks to harvest from your life today.
