Passage: Matthew 18:7-9*
7. "Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is
inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling
block comes!
8. "And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it
off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than
having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire.
9. "And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and
throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than having two eyes,
to be cast into the fiery hell.
Questions
1. Are you ever going to be free from the things that may trip you
up?
2. If you're having a porn problem, do you feel more like the victim
or the enabler?
Practical help
Sometimes there's no progress to be made in fighting a besetting sin
because you fail to consider your real point of view.
When you view yourself as the victim, the one who stumbles, then it
becomes easier to stumble again and again. After all, it's not your fault. You just happen
to be prone to stumbling in this area.
Today try viewing yourself as the enabler, the one who's spreading
around the stumbling blocks. Tell yourself, "If I stumble today, it's because I took
an action that made it easy to trip." Now plan your day in a way that keeps these
words of Jesus in full view -- "Woe to that man through whom the stumbling block
comes!" You might even play with the words a little and also say "Whoa!" to
that man.
