strong in the face of sexual temptation.
Passage:
Psalm 76:11*
Make vows to the Lord your
God and fulfill them.
Questions
1. What vows have you
already made to God?
2. Could a vow help you resist
pornography? Why or why not?
Practical
help
The New York City police
department reduced crime by record levels in the 1990s
with methods many observers initially called obsolete.
Under the shorthand name of "broken windows," the NYPD
returned to an old-fashioned notion that small crimes
lead to large crimes so broken windows should
be fixed, and subway turnstile jumpers should be
prosecuted. A decade later, even the skeptics admit
that back-to-basics policing helped the city fight
crime.
A back-to-basics method can
prove just as effective in your struggle against
pornography. The method? A vow. Though the only one
you may have made so far was on your wedding day,
Psalm 76:11 suggests that vows can apply to more areas
than marriage. There's no biblical reason for
believers to take a silence of vows.
So why not make vows to avoid
pornography? To help you live out the second part of
the verse "and fulfill them" tell other
believers about the specific content of your promises
to God. The support of the Christian community can
help us stay faithful in more ways than
one.
