Passage: Luke 13:1-5*

1. Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

2. Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?

3. I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

4. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them -- do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?

5. I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

Questions

1. What role do the victims play in the disasters Jesus recounts?

2. What role does God play?

Practical help

Some people blamed gays for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They said God was finally punishing America for years of waywardness.

Preciously wrong. If God were in a judging mood, he could have authorized the destruction for a number of reasons unrelated to sexual morality. Example: ignoring the poor — something God seems to place above most other issues. Besides, in the Lukan passage, Jesus doesn't blame individuals or groups for disasters, natural (the tower in Siloam) or otherwise (the Galileans killed by Pilate).

But there is one lesson all of us can take from the passage and the terrorist attacks: the need to repent (verse 5). Let the gays repent of homosexuality. Let the tightwads repent of greediness. And let the lustful repent of pornography.
