Passage: 2 Chronicles 28:22-23*

22. In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.

23. He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, "Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me." But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.

Questions

1. Why did King Ahaz expect help from the gods of Damascus?

2. How are we like him?

Practical help

Here's a twist on a common spiritual idea — bad sacrificial living. King Ahaz, with his dependence on foreign gods, eventually suffered the consequences of his misplaced devotion. He also dragged the entire nation of Israel down with him.

Our pornographic indulgences follow the same pattern. Like the gods of Damascus, porn is accessible and (increasingly) accepted by society. In a rerun of the TV show "Friends," roommates Chandler and Joey make running jokes about their addiction to cable pornography. And we laugh along with them.

But the sacrifices we make to fit into our culture undermine our character as surely they did King Ahaz's. The message from Scripture: The ripple effect of pornography will destroy you — and the ones close to you.
