Passage: Mark 4:26-29*

26. He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground.

27. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

28. All by itself the soil produces grain — first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.

29. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come."

Questions

1. What is Jesus saying about the kingdom of God?

2. How does this message apply to us?

Practical help

For teetotalers and anti-dancers, Scripture offers little comfort; in moderation, the bottle and the jitterbug get the thumbs-up. Such artifacts of cultural — as opposed to biblical — Christianity pop up everywhere.

Take the American notion of fighting problems. On one politician's Web site, the navigation bar is organized by all of the things the candidate is "fighting for." Fighting is not always bad. But fighting problems is not always good either.

Should we fight our urges to view porn? Of course. That's what this Web site is all about. Nonetheless, there's another way to view the situation highlighted by the passage above — that fighting is God's business, and he's going to get the job done whether we sleep or get up. God will do the work.

For the first time I can remember, an eXXit three-minute Bible study will offer no application step. Jesus doesn't give one here. That may not sound like America, but it sure sounds like the kingdom of God.
