Passage: John 11:9-10*
9. Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A
man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light.
10. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no
light."
Questions
1. What does light do for you?
2. What happens to you when you try to walk across a dark room,
especially a dark, unfamiliar room?
Practical help
In the context of this passage, Jesus was answering his disciples'
fears over his decision to return to Jerusalem in the face of death threats. Jesus could
enter into that danger because he was enlightened by the knowledge of his father's plan
and his father's goodness.
The lure of the world of pornography is in part the apparent lack of risk -- you can get
what you really want without having to face rejection or disappointment in relationships
with people. The trap is that at the core what you really want isn't the gratification of
the visual senses but the soul-warming joy of relationship -- to know and be known. You
end up frustrating the very thing you long for. If instead your illumination comes from a
deep relationship with the true light, then the risk in relationships with fallen people
is lessened by your clearer vision. Sure, those rejections will still hurt (just like
Jesus' suffering -- he knew what he was in for), but their impact will be outlasted by the
eternal relationship with him.
