Passage:
Psalm
1:1-6*
1. Blessed is the man who
does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in
the way of sinners or sit in the seat of
mockers.
2. But his delight is in the law
of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 . He is like a tree planted by
streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and
whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does
prospers.
4. Not so the wicked! They are
like chaff that the wind blows away.
5. Therefore the wicked will not
stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of
the righteous.
6. For the
LORD
watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of
the wicked will perish.
Question
What does it mean to
meditate (as in verse 2 above)?
Practical
help
If you're trying to avoid
the bad advice, bad examples and bad humor behind porn
habits (click
here to see "Adverse Behaviors," our previous study on
verse 1 above), the
passage above has good news. It suggests that
delighting and meditating on God's Word (also know as
his law) will help you stand strong.
But how to meditate? Consider
these steps:**
1. Memorize.
Commit biblical passages to memory. Consider
starting with short texts that spotlight the
advantages of Scripture memory. The passage above
is an example.
2. Visualize. Picture
the scene described in the passage. Verse 3 above
lends itself well to visualization.
3. Personalize. Put
yourself in the picture. For example, imagine
yourself contemplating God's Word and prospering
like a well-nourished tree as a result.
