Passage: John 17:17*
Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.
Questions
1. In John 17, Jesus is praying for His disciples — then and now. For what is He praying in the verse above?
2. What is the means by which this prayer’s answer will be realized?
Practical help
If an item is "sanctified," it is set apart for special use. A fine golf club is set apart for the links, and should not be put to other uses (i.e. — a hammer). That golf club is "sanctified."
You, a believer in Jesus Christ have also been "sanctified" or "set apart" for a special purpose. You have been set apart for God’s purposes and you are to live in such a way that you bring glory and honor to God.
While the initial setting apart took place the instant you put your trust in Jesus, the practical outworking will take the rest of your life. In other words, the longer you live and the more you learn to trust and obey God, the better equipped you will be to bring Him honor and glory. You will be increasingly "set apart" for His good purposes.
In His prayer, Jesus mentions an indispensable instrument for equipping us as set apart people: God’s Word!
Want to increasingly lead a God-honoring life which is marked by, among other things, freedom from porn? Of course you do! Then run (don’t walk!) to Scripture, one of God’s chief sanctifying tools.
