After mentioning humility
in verse 2, Paul next tells us that Christians who are
learning to "walk worthy" of their calling are
gentle.
We often speak of a horse being
"gentle." A gentle horse is a horse whose strength is
under control. You can trust that horse around kids.
It won't hurt them. But that doesn't mean that the
horse is weak! A horse can be strong and gentle
because its strength is reined in.
Likewise, gentle Christians are
not weak; their strength is under the control of their
Lord.
There is a studied,
self-confident, stability in gentle people. They don't
back down from a confrontation when one is called for,
but they are careful to confront in love. They use
their strength to benefit the weak.
Walking worthy of your calling
requires that you submit your strength to the Lord's
bit, that you allow Him to harness you for His
tasks.
Because your strength is at His
disposal, you don't fly off the handle at the least
provocation. You exercise the strength of your
personality and will to further His purposes. You even
submit your sexual strength and energies to Him! Your
passions are harnessed for God's purposes, not for the
wicked designs of pornography.
