Passage: Colossians 1:9-12*
9. For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not
ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in
all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
10. so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please
Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of
God;
11. strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might,
for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously
12. giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in
the inheritance of the saints in light.
Questions
1. Count the specific items Paul prays for the Colossian believers.
How many do you find?
2. When did Paul begin praying for them?
3. What is his assessment of their spiritual potential, according to
verse 12?
Practical help
As I count, the apostle Paul prays for at least eight things in this
brief prayer! This may be one of the clearest expressions of the will of God for the
Christian we find anywhere in the New Testament. So, one application of this prayer might
be to “Go out and bear fruit” (v. 10) or to “Work hard to attain
steadfastness and patience.” Those might be good things to do - but Paul doesn’t
say that we are to go out and do these things. His point in writing down this prayer is to
tell them what they can expect God to be doing in their life - because he is praying! Why
not apply this prayer by:
- praying that God would build the maturity spoken of in these verses
into your life,
- asking a Christian friend to pray that God would fulfill these
requests in your life.
Then, see what God does! In fact, see what He does with your
chronic, hard-to-break habit of pornography viewing when you bring the power of God to
bear on your problem through prayer!
