Passage: Matthew 6:7-10*

7. And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9. Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Questions

1. What do you have to have to have a kingdom?

2. If God to do anything for you, what would you like Him to do? Does what you want square with the statement, "Thy will be done."?

Practical help

"I don’t know what God wants. So how can I pray that His will be done?"

Many people use this as a cop-out to do whatever they want. The logic goes like this: Since I don’t hear audibly from God, He isn’t speaking, or He isn’t clear. Because He isn’t clear, it’s left to me to do whatever I want — and right now I want to look at porn.

Let’s study today’s passage a little more closely. Jesus tells us that God is in control in heaven. He is a God of order and is holy (verse 9). This statement is asking that God’s order come into our world — that His kingdom replace our chaos.

I hope you are beginning to learn that prayer has more to do with asking God to do what He wants in us than it is for you or me to get what we want. The good news is that when God rules, we receive a life of incredible blessings.
