Passage: Matthew 6:7-11*

7. And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9. Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

11. Give us this day our daily bread;

Questions

1. Why is this request for daily bread not a selfish prayer (look carefully)?

2. What basic needs do you have that God must supply on a daily basis?

Practical help

We live in such affluence that we don’t immediately see how needy we are. Take air, for example. You could have just won the lottery, but if I toss you in water over your head and you can’t swim, how important is that money to you then?

It’s time to take another look at your life. Dump the emptiness of diversions and perversions and take a bite of real bread. See John 6:31-40 to get even a deeper understanding of what this passage truly means.
