Passage: Colossians 3:12-15*

12. And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

13. bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

14. And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

15. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

1. These verses speak to life in the church. It tells how Christians are to relate to each other. Locate the different words that describe how you should deal with your fellow Christians.

 

2. In verse 12, what has God done that should prompt us to compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience with others?

Practical help

There is no question that God intends for Christian to lead pure lives. That is made clear in several places in the book of Colossians (among many other places in the New Testament). Sometimes, Scripture’s strategy for promoting personal holiness is to condemn sin and urge godly self-control. Sometimes, though, a more subtle strategy is employed. That is the case in the passage above.

Paul knows that Christian fellowship that is of a certain quality has a purifying effect. When the emphasis of relationships between Christians is compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patient, forbearance, forgiveness, love and thanksgiving - good things happen!
