Passage: Judges 21:25*
In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.
Questions
1. What happens when no authority monitors human behavior?
2. How can we apply this truth to our struggle against pornography?
Practical help
When "The Jungle" hit bookstores in the early 1900s, Upton Sinclair's expose of the meat-packing industry prompted new laws to protect citizens from tainted products. Today, the Food and Drug Administration continues to police the industry for items that are "unfit for human consumption."
America needs another Upton Sinclair — but one that aims a little lower than the stomach. Pornography undermines individual and community life, yet no exposes of the industry have garnered widespread public support. Why?
The answer lies in Judges 21:25. Like that time in Israel, modern-day America prefers to do without any ultimate authority. Then "everyone did as he saw fit." That's a concise description of our current penchant for laissez-faire morality.
But we can't so easily dodge authority. Non-believers should eventually come to terms with the commonsensical notion that corruption by pornography must be suppressed. Believers should eventually submit to an even higher authority, a King who dictates what's fit for human consumption. Hint: Porn doesn't make the grade.
