Passage: 1 John 2:1-2*

1. My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

2. and He Himself is the propitiation [atoning sacrifice] for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

Questions

1. According to verse 1, for what purpose is John writing all that he writes?

2. What is the good news at the end of verse one and in verse two for those who sin?

3. Write down in your own words what it means to have an "Advocate" on your side.

Practical Help

John's words here are not so much preventative to keep a Christian from sinning. They are more for healing once a sin has been committed. There is Gospel in these verses. Make no mistake about it. God is interested in holiness for His people. However, He has made provision for our failures and sins, knowing full well that we are all "in process" and will from time to time stumble and fall. We will sin, and when we sin, grace is available.

If you have placed your faith in Jesus, you have an Advocate who is on your side against the Accuser (Satan). Jesus, who is Righteous, gives you His righteousness. His death has atoned for (forgiven) your sins.

Have you slipped and fallen again in your striving to have nothing to do with Internet porn? Don't be afraid to return to the Lord Jesus. He will forgive and restore and cleanse.

Failure is not fatal. The final word from God on the matter of His people's sin is grace. Jesus is for you! Get up and walk again.
