Practical help
Bad ideas die slow deaths.
Take Freudianism. The theory that sexual repression explains our neuroses and often leads to far more significant problems is in retreat in the academic world. But many Americans act like sex still governs their lives. Overheard during the D.C. sniper crisis: "That's a man who's not gettin' any." Uh huh.
These warmed-over Freudians have enlisted a new tool to loosen up famously repressed Americans: Web porn. This "marital aid" will spice up our sex lives, they say, if only we would release our outmoded moral qualms. Ironically, their perspective is the outmoded one. Like Marxists parroting the party line after the collapse of the Soviet Union, modern Freudians can still make a case — but the world has moved on.
Meanwhile, Scripture remains unmoved. It pronounces this verdict on the so-called benefits of Freudian libertinism and its sidekick, Web porn: "There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death."
