Passage: 1 John 2:28-29*

28. And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

29. If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

Questions

1. "Confident," "unashamed" — are these adjectives which describe how you feel right now?

2. If not, are your feelings flowing out of what you have done, or out of what you know and believe?

Practical help

The key phrase from this passage: "continue in him." It's not enough just to continue — continue trying as hard as you can, continue doing your best, continue looking for the answers. If it's not "in him," these efforts won't bring victory.

So many Christians feel pretty tentative about their walk in faith. Confidence is replaced with fear; boldness supplanted by shame. That's because the focus is in the wrong place — themselves. Confidence should be rooted in one place: Jesus Christ. It's not nearly so important that we know that we are righteous as it is that we know that he is righteous.

How do you know that his coming will not be to your shame? Get to know Jesus Christ.
