Practical help
Wisdom is in short supply today — and time lag deserves some of the blame.
In the good old days, foolish behavior — such as lying or adultery — brought about judgment relatively quickly. But nowadays, sheer wealth can postpone the just desserts of our folly for years and possibly until the day we die.
Pornography thrives under this time lag. The Old Testament warnings against unchanneled sexuality still apply — those dark desires do set us on a destructive path that leads to death — but money can bail us out of some of the consequences. Medical plans cover venereal disease. Alimony and child support allow shattered families to survive. Counselors help us patch up our psychic wounds.
But note that our money can bail us out of some of the consequences. The rest of Ezekiel 28 makes clear that money can delay justice, but it can't eliminate it. God will eventually settle accounts. And he won't be interested in our net worth.
