This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3. This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4. for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5. Who is it that overcomes the world? This passage says a lot about overcoming. But the recipe here for overcoming doesn't involve putting all your effort into the struggle. It involves one thing: faith. Not faith in a set of principles or rules, but faith in a living God with a living Son — Jesus Christ. Once that faith is your own faith, then the commands — to love others, to avoid impurity — are no longer burdensome. How do you know that you are a child of God? By your belief in God's firstborn child — Jesus Christ. How do you know that you are loving the children of God?
