Key terms: "inside world" "outside world" "purity" "see God"

Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.*

Alternate translation

You're blessed when you get your inside world — your mind and heart — put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.**

Questions

1. Read Matthew 5:1-12 in order to see the context of the above verse. Who is speaking these words?

2. Is it possible to see God? If so, what condition must first exist?

3. From this verse, is there a limit placed on the number of people who qualify to see God?

4. If you could see God working in your "outside world," how might this affect your life?

Practical Help

One thing I have always found about this section of Scripture (familiar though it is) is that in just a few words it can grab a hold of my heart and remind me of what is important and what is superficial in my life. Internet porn seems to promise us happiness (at least for the moment), but it is no blessing. Instead, as we seek fulfillment or enjoyment in viewing unhealthy material, we loose sight of God and the real world around us.

My prayer for you is that you will choose to purify your mind by avoiding images that draw life from you. Instead, seek to become a person who gains the capacity to see God at work. Ask Him to cleanse you and give you new life (Psalm 139).
