Passage:
Ecclesiastes
4:6*
Better one handful with
tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing
after the wind.
Question
How often do you feel
tranquil?
Practical
help
For all its addictive
nature, porn can't hold a candle to the powerful
effects of tranquillity.
Relaxation. Positive mood.
Contentment.
Oddly, these are the things porn
viewers seek but never find, as though on a chase for
the wind.
If you want these salutary
effects, switch from smut to simplicity, from
high-tech fantasy to commonplace reality. Hugging a
loved one or friend. Feeling the grass under your bare
feet on a walk in the park. Savoring coffee at your
desk.
The experienced writer of
Ecclesiastes, who elsewhere admits to having tried
every known approach to pleasure, puts his money on
simplicity.
It's the tranquil conclusion of
one who knows that God is in control and that any
pursuit not ordained by him is an exhausting and
fruitless chase.
